Reggae superstar Buju Banton, who is facing the greatest battle of his life in the United States, has won his first ever Grammy at the 53rd Grammy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night.
Buju Banton beat out five other nominees to capture the Grammy for best reggae album for his critically acclaimed album “Before The Dawn.”
Although Banton was previously nominated some four times, this is the first time the artist score a victory. Banton was also nominated last year for his album “Rasta Got Soul,” but didn’t win.
The other nominees for ‘Best Reggae Album’ were Gregory Isaacs and King Isaac – Isaacs Meets Isaac; Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry – Revelation; Bob Sinclair and Sly and Robbie – Made in Jamaica; Sly and Robbie and the Family Taxi – One Pop Reggae; and Andrew Tosh – Legacy: An Acoustic Tribute to Peter Tosh.
Banton, who will begin his second trial today in a Florida Court on drugs and gun charges, joins the likes of Beenie Man, Ziggy Marley, Shabba, Sean Paul, Black Uhuru and Damion ‘Junior Gong’ Marley, as famous reggae Grammy winners.
